Nate's Suggestion for a First Aid Kit

• If nothing else, cell phone.
• If only one other thing, surgical gloves, pref. Nitrile (doubles for maint.)

• Minor care items:

  • Band aids
    -Assorted (get knuckle ones, too!)
  • 5x9" dressings
    -Qty 2-3 -Tight weave (also called ABD or abdominal pad)
  • Roller bandage
    -Trade name Kling -May skip if you don't mind pulling hair with tape
  • Bacitracin/Neosporin antibacterial ointment
    -Small tube
  • Pepto
    -Several tabs
  • Anti-Inflamatory of choice
    • Advil/Aleve = Ibuprofen/Naproxen.
    • Do not use Aspirin.
    • Tylenol is not anti inflamatory
  • Benadryl for routine beesting or minor allergy care
    -Use MD prescribed kit if actually allergic to stings (duh!)

• Bigger stuff:

  • Trauma Dressing
    -Qty 1 -Very large dressing for major bleeding
  • Cravats
    -(Qty 2) -Triangular bandage -Can be used for pressure dressing or sling
  • Duct tape
    -Doubles for maint.
  • Trauma shears
    -Will cut anything, doubles for maint.

• Visibility measure

  -LED/Reflective/Flare

The most important thing you can have in an emergency situation is a calm and methodical demeanor! Stay calm! Stay focused!

These contents are for a "bare bones" kit for streetriding. You can expand this kit as far as you'd like. For backcountry or adventure riding, more knowledge and materials are suggested.

You may be able to find many items at a drugstore.

If you've got a buddy who's a firefighter or EMT, they can probably get you what you need, too ;-)
